Eligibility for Chemistry PhD
For the School of Chemical Sciences, applicants normally need 55% marks or equivalent GPA in a master’s degree in Chemistry or an allied Chemistry field. NISER also encourages applications from master’s graduates in other basic sciences who studied Chemistry at undergraduate level, and relevant MTech graduates in Applied Chemistry or Computer Sciences. Alternatively, candidates with a four-year/eight-semester bachelor’s degree with Chemistry as the major subject and at least 75% aggregate marks may apply. All applicants must also have qualified CSIR-UGC NET or GATE valid for 2026–27. Schools may set further shortlisting cut-offs.
Final-year qualifying-degree candidates may apply with the required undertaking, but must produce the qualifying degree certificates by admission. Candidates holding only an INSPIRE Doctoral Fellowship without the specified national test are not eligible under this advertisement.
Fellowship and Research Opportunities
Under the institute fellowship scheme, the stated rates are ₹37,000 per month as JRF for the first two years and ₹42,000 per month as SRF for up to three more years, subject to academic requirements. Students funded by an external CSIR, UGC or other fellowship follow the funding agency’s rules instead of drawing a separate NISER/DAE fellowship. Research areas depend on available faculty and projects; explore the School of Chemical Sciences faculty profiles.
Selection Process
Each school shortlists eligible applications using academic record, national examination qualification and any additional criteria. Shortlisted candidates attend an interview, potentially supplemented by a written test. Meeting the minimum marks does not guarantee an interview. Eligible candidates called for a test/interview can claim return second-sleeper-class rail fare by the shortest route upon producing valid documents, as stated in the advertisement.
How to Apply
- Read the official NISER PhD admission advertisement (PDF).
- Open the NISER online application portal from the official NISER website.
- Select the School of Chemical Sciences and complete the form with academic, CSIR NET/GATE and contact details.
- Upload photograph, signature, educational records, qualifying examination proof and applicable documents; submit before 1 November 2026.
- Save the submitted form and check the official announcements for shortlists and interviews.
Applicants to more than one school must submit separate applications with the relevant documents.
Who Should Apply?
This opportunity is especially relevant to MSc Chemistry graduates with a valid CSIR-UGC NET or GATE qualification who want doctoral research, as well as eligible four-year Chemistry-major graduates meeting the higher marks threshold. A standard three-year BSc Chemistry degree alone does not satisfy the advertised Chemical Sciences degree route.
