IIT JAM Chemistry 2027 Exam Pattern at a Glance
The IIT JAM Chemistry (CY) paper is a computer-based test (CBT). All three sections are compulsory. MCQ questions have negative marking; MSQ and NAT questions do not.
| Section | Question type | Question breakdown | Total marks | Penalty for wrong answer |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | MCQ (single correct) | 10 × 1 mark + 20 × 2 marks = 30 questions | 50 | −⅓ (1-mark); −⅔ (2-mark) |
| B | MSQ (one or more correct) | 10 × 2 marks = 10 questions | 20 | None; no partial marks |
| C | NAT (numerical answer) | 10 × 1 mark + 10 × 2 marks = 20 questions | 30 | None |
| Total | All sections | 60 questions | 100 | Negative marking only in A |
Section A: MCQ — One Correct Answer
Each Multiple Choice Question has four options, but only one is correct. This section contributes 50 marks, half the paper. Wrong answers reduce your score: â…“ mark is deducted for a wrong 1-mark MCQ, and â…” mark for a wrong 2-mark MCQ. Unanswered questions receive zero.
MCQ attempt strategy
- Attempt confident answers first; do not spend too long on a single numerical calculation.
- Eliminate impossible choices using units, signs, limiting cases, chemical trends, or reaction conditions.
- For uncertain questions, weigh your actual confidence against the negative-marking risk rather than guessing blindly.
Section B: MSQ — One or More Correct Answers
Each Multiple Select Question can have one or more correct options. There are 10 questions worth 2 marks each, for 20 marks total. To earn credit, you must select every correct option and no incorrect option. There is no partial marking and no negative marking.
MSQ attempt strategy
- Judge each option independently as true or false; do not assume exactly two options must be correct.
- For inorganic chemistry, check oxidation states, geometry, electron counts and exceptions.
- For organic chemistry, consider competing products, stereochemistry and reaction conditions.
- For physical chemistry, test assumptions and the domain of a formula.
Section C: NAT — Numerical Answer Type
NAT questions do not show answer choices. You enter a numerical answer using the on-screen virtual keypad. This section contains 20 questions worth 30 marks, and there is no negative marking.
NAT attempt strategy
- Write the formula before substituting values, and track units throughout.
- Recheck signs, significant digits and rounding against the question’s instructions.
- Practice numerical problems from thermodynamics, kinetics, electrochemistry, spectroscopy and other relevant syllabus topics.
- Use the on-screen calculator when permitted and helpful; avoid bringing a physical calculator.
How to Allocate Your 180 Minutes
There is no single ideal time split for every student. The following is a practice starting point, not an official rule:
| Stage | Suggested time | Goal |
|---|---|---|
| First pass | 65 minutes | Solve straightforward questions across sections |
| Second pass | 75 minutes | Work through medium and calculation-heavy questions |
| Review | 40 minutes | Check NAT entries, MSQ option sets and risky MCQs |
Refine your timing after several full-length mock tests. In particular, avoid sacrificing a set of easier questions because one difficult problem consumed too much time.
Common Exam Pattern Mistakes to Avoid
- Confusing MCQ with MSQ: MCQ has one correct choice; MSQ may have multiple correct choices.
- Assuming partial marks in MSQ: an incomplete selection earns zero.
- Ignoring negative marking: only MCQs penalize wrong answers.
- Rushing NAT entry: correct chemistry with a mistyped number can still lose marks.
- Skipping official instructions: check the JAM 2027 brochure for the final exam-day rules.
Prepare for the Exam Pattern with Previous Papers
Start with the IIT JAM Chemistry 2027 syllabus guide, follow the 6-month, 3-month and 30-day study plans, and practise with the topic-wise PYQ analysis. Track accuracy separately for MCQ, MSQ and NAT so you can improve the specific skills each format tests.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many questions are in IIT JAM Chemistry 2027?
There are 60 questions for 100 marks, divided into 30 MCQs, 10 MSQs and 20 NAT questions.
Is there negative marking in IIT JAM Chemistry?
Yes, but only in Section A (MCQ): â…“ mark for a wrong 1-mark question and â…” mark for a wrong 2-mark question.
Is there partial marking in MSQ?
No. All correct options, and no wrong options, must be selected to earn full marks.
Are calculators allowed?
The examination provides an on-screen virtual calculator. Physical calculators and other electronic devices are not permitted in the examination hall.
