Detailed Exam Pattern for IIT JAM Chemistry (CY) Exam

The IIT JAM (Joint Admission Test for Masters) Chemistry exam pattern is designed to assess the candidate’s understanding and knowledge in various areas of chemistry. Here is a detailed breakdown of the exam pattern:

  Mode of Examination

 Computer Based Test (CBT) : The exam is conducted online.

  Duration

 3 hours : The total duration of the exam is three hours.

  Total Marks

 100 marks : The exam is conducted for a total of 100 marks.

  Number of Questions

 60 questions : The exam consists of 60 questions divided into three sections.

  Types of Questions

  1. Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) :
  • Each MCQ has four options, out of which only one is the correct answer.
  • Negative marking is applicable for incorrect answers.
  • For 1-mark questions, 1/3 mark is deducted for each wrong answer.
  • For 2-mark questions, 2/3 mark is deducted for each wrong answer.
  1. Multiple Select Questions (MSQ) :
  • Each MSQ has four options, out of which one or more options can be correct.
  • There is no negative marking  for MSQs.
  • No partial credit is awarded. All correct options must be selected to get full marks.
  1. Numerical Answer Type (NAT) :
  • For NAT questions, the answer is a real number that needs to be entered using the virtual numeric keypad provided on the screen.
  • There is no negative marking  for NAT questions.

  1. Section A :
  • Contains 30 MCQs.
  • 10 questions of 1 mark each and 20 questions of 2 marks each.
  • Negative marking applies as mentioned above.
  1. Section B :
  • Contains 10 MSQs.
  • Each question carries 2 marks.
  • No negative marking.
  1. Section C :
  • Contains 20 NAT questions.
  • 10 questions of 1 mark each and 10 questions of 2 marks each.
