GATE 2024 Chemistry (CY) Exam Pattern

 Mode of Examination: Computer Based Test (CBT)

 Duration : 3 hours

 Number of Questions: 65 questions

 Types of Questions:

  • Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ): Each question has four choices, out of which only one is correct.
  • Multiple Select Questions (MSQ): Each question has four choices, out of which one or more are correct.
  • Numerical Answer Type (NAT): Questions where the answer is a real number to be entered using a virtual keypad.

 Sections :

  1. General Aptitude (GA)
  • Number of Questions: 10
  • Marks: 15

       2. Subject Specific Section (Chemistry CY)

  • Number of Questions: 55
  • Marks: 85

 Total Marks: 100 marks

Distribution of Marks:

  • General Aptitude:
  • 15 marks
  • 5 questions of 1 mark each
  • 5 questions of 2 marks each
  • Subject Specific Section: 85 marks
  • Questions carry either 1 mark or 2 marks

Marking Scheme:

  • MCQ :
  • For 1 mark MCQ, 1/3 mark is deducted for a wrong answer.
  • For 2 mark MCQ, 2/3 mark is deducted for a wrong answer.
  • MSQ :
  • No negative marking.
  • NAT :
  • No negative marking.

 Abilities Tested :

  • Recall : Based on facts, principles, formulae, or laws of the discipline.
  • Comprehension : Understanding of concepts and principles.
  • Application : Application of knowledge through computations and logical reasoning.
  • Analysis and Synthesis : Interpretation of data, diagrams, and information requiring analysis before answering.

Important Notes:

  • The General Aptitude section is common across all GATE papers.
  • The subject specific section (Chemistry) focuses on core topics related to Chemistry.
  • A virtual scientific calculator will be provided on the computer screen.
  • No electronic devices, including personal calculators, are allowed in the examination hall.
  • Rough work scribble pads will be provided, which must be returned after the exam.
